Big Rapids Commissioners Adopt Marketing Strategy

BIG RAPIDS - At a recent meeting, the Big Rapids City Commission passed a resolution supporting the city's marketing strategy.

The resolution said the marketing plan was created as part of the city's efforts to become a certified Redevelopment Ready Community through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

The marketing plan aims to guide the city's marketing efforts through 2027, with the first half of the plan assessing physical assets, resources, partners and current brand direction. The second part of the plan recommends goals and actions that can be implemented to expand the city's marketing efforts.

"The city has talked about this many times and this is a step forward for the city," said City Manager Mark Gifford.

Community Development Officer Jesse Black led the development of the marketing plan along with a steering committee made up of city staff, representatives from Ferris State University and local business leaders.

Swart told the board of trustees that the steering committee is gathering data and feedback on residents' support for downtown businesses, including a survey that asked questions about their favorite aspects of the city, shopping habits at downtown stores and suggestions for improvement.

"Input from 193 respondents helped shape the marketing plan," Black said.

Some marketing strategy recommendations include hiring a marketing director, coordinating with the Downtown Development Authority, and coordinating with the post-Soviet marketing program to implement and evaluate the plan on an ongoing basis.

A marketing strategy contains a set of goals and actions that guide the city's development decisions.

Objectives:

  • Attracting new residents to the city with an emphasis on families and young professionals; encourage existing residents to be active in their community.
  • Increase communication between the city and residents regarding important updates, community events, etc.
  • Supporting existing businesses, attracting new businesses and promoting downtown jobs for businesses looking to relocate or expand.
  • Attract new visitors to the city by targeting out-of-towners and students.
  • Attracting new development to downtown Big Rapids, focusing on retail, dining and activity-oriented businesses; facilitating additional investment in existing companies.

Action points:

  • Continue to work toward the certification of Redevelopment Ready Communities through MEDC. Once completed, work with the Mecosta County Chamber of Commerce and the Mecosta County Development Corporation to spread the word through the website, social and traditional media.
  • Create an economic development website at cityofbr.org to promote areas ready for redevelopment. Mecosta County Development Corporation and MEDC redevelopment sites are market priority.
  • Facilitate coordination between the Downtown Development Authority, the Downtown Business Association, the Big Rapids Chamber of Commerce and the Mecosta County Development Corporation.
  • Coordinating event calendars to be posted on the Big Rapids Convention and Visitors Bureau website; participate in social media and create professional photos and videos to promote the area.
  • Participate in the Michigan Main Street Program and as a new Michigan Trail City, work with MDNR, Friends of the White Pine and others to promote this designation and develop a Clean Michigan signage plan.
  • Updating the master plan of the city with the inclusion of the development strategy.

At the October meeting, the city executive committee approved the appointment of city employees to the position of marketing director.
