Baker Book House Announces New CEO

A new leader has joined an independent Christian publishing house.
Baker Book House It has named Jesse Mayer as its next CEO, effective May 1, following the resignation of CEO Dwight Baker in June.
"When Dwight announced his retirement, our board was tasked with vetting and selecting the next CEO for the Baker family," said Kathryn Scanland, CEO of Baker Bookhouse. "After a six-month process, our board of directors unanimously and enthusiastically selected Jesse Myers to fill this important role. We believe Jesse is the perfect person to continue Baker's rich legacy as a leading publisher of Christian books."
Myers has over 10 years of experience in the Christian publishing industry.
Currently based in Bellingham, Wash., Myers is an editor at Lexham Press and director of original content at Faithlife, makers of Logos Bible software. He was instrumental in the growth and development of Faithlife's original publisher, Kesham Press, and spent eight and a half years in the company's sales, marketing and editorial roles.
Before joining Lexham, Myers worked at Eardman's Publishing Co. in Grand Rapids. He spent two years as a field manager.
Myers said her experience in various positions in the publishing industry helped prepare her for her first role as executive director of Baker Bookhouse.
"I think that's a big part of what qualifies me for this role, because I've had the opportunity to do different things in publishing," Myers said. "I think it's a little weird. You usually get caught up in the thread of industry."
Myers will be the publisher's first non-Baker family CEO, a big change for Baker Bookhouse.
"It's an honor that the board elected me and believed in me," Myers said. "I definitely feel the burden of preserving the legacy and building and maintaining the business." Plus, it's a much bigger team than the one I lead at FaithLife.
We are grateful for the Board of Directors' efforts on behalf of the Baker family in selecting Jesse as our next CEO. Publishing Today: We warmly welcome Jesse and promise to pray for him as he takes on his new role.
Myers looks forward to exploring the challenges facing the publishing world due to Covid-19, managing bottlenecks and supply chain delays, and adapting to the changing publishing environment.
He hopes to expand Baker's understanding in the future.
"I really want to try to duplicate the catalog," Myers said. "I want to try to get into new markets and try to expand the customer base a little bit. Those are probably [my] biggest initial goals."
Myers holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master of Divinity from Providence Theological Seminary. His wife, Marilyn Myers, is a former professor at Calvin University and has developed a deep connection to West Michigan.
Baker will begin transitioning into his role in January 2023 and said he and his family are excited to be back in the region.
"We've really enjoyed our past visits to Grand Rapids," Myers said. "It's a big, vibrant city and we were welcomed when we moved here. I feel like we're picking up where we left off."
Founded in 1939, Baker Bookhouse includes the Baker Publishing Group and the Baker Bookhouse Grand Rapids retail business. Baker Publishing Group is the world's largest publisher of Christian books and consists of six divisions: Bethany House, Revell, Baker Books, Chosen, Brazos Press and Baker Academy.
