Intent Research vs. Keyword Research

In 2020, Bing's Frédéric Dubut told us: "Keyword research will likely become obsolete and should move to intent research as a practice."

Barry Schwartz interviewed Google's John Mueller about Dubut's testimony. This is what Mueller said:

  • “Because you give users these words, there will likely always be room for keyword research. Even if search engines try to understand more than just these words, it can be easier to show users specific words, what your pages are about, and what they're talking about. Sometimes this conversion process can be a bit exhilarating."

So, does outdated keyword research still exist? 2023 has certainly changed the way SEOs think about the user intent or search intent behind a search query. But keyword research isn't obsolete yet.

Read all about it at Google's John Mueller Intent Research and Keyword Research for 2020.
