Marketing Strategy Is The Most Undervalued Skill By Businesses, Marketers Say

The Marketing Week 2023 Career and Salary Survey 2023 shows that marketers are among the most undervalued skills by companies, with marketing strategy, brand management, and data analytics ranking high.

According to Marketing Week's 2023 career and salary survey, marketing strategy is the most underrated skill in business.

More than half (51.5%) of the more than 3,000 marketers who took part in this year's survey said companies underestimate their marketing strategies.

This number drops to 46.7% for B2C marketers but rises to 52.4% for B2B marketers and 54.9% for those in both B2B and B2C companies.

According to marketers, brand management (43.1%) is the second least important marketing skill. Again, broken down by business type, 43% of B2B marketers believe that brand management is not getting the attention it deserves from businesses, while 41.5% of B2C marketers and 44.8% of B2B and B2C companies agree.

They also noted that 32.9% of marketers underestimate their company's data analysis. More B2B marketers (33.4%) than B2C marketers (28.4%) say companies underestimate data analytics, with 36.6% of mixed B2B and B2C marketers suspecting this is a problem.

Across the sample, 22.8% of marketers believe that advertising and marketing technology are undervalued by companies, followed by business intelligence (21.4%), results-based marketing (18.2%), and profit and loss management (15 %, 9).

According to marketers, social media is the most valuable business skill. Cheryl Calverly, former CEO of Eve Sleep, doesn't care too much about ratings marketing strategy. “It’s not a problem because people will always appreciate the fact that they can understand what to tell and show,” he said. "And companies really need to focus on the impact of things" rather than the strategy behind them.

“If you think a company is undermining your marketing strategy, don't communicate in a way that will help you. We all know it's important, and no company will say they don't believe in strategy.
