Sharjah, 1st May 2023 (WAM) -- For the second consecutive year, the 2nd International Booksellers Summit will bring together global industry experts to offer tools and information for industry success.

The International Booksellers Conference is an effective initiative of the Sharjah Book Authority to bring together renowned experts and publishers from around the world to share their experiences and knowledge to promote and support the book industry. The conference will be held from May 1 to 2 at the Sharjah Exhibition Center and is proving its value to all participants.

In a session titled Building Your Digital Presence: How UK Booksellers Are Using Online Platforms to Increase Book Sales, panelists discussed the importance of building an online presence and growing your digital presence to increase book sales. He also emphasized the importance of building a strong community of book lovers and using social media effectively to connect with buyers and promote books.

This information session was moderated by Mark Thornton of Bookshop.org, Sarah Dennis of Most Books and Borzoi Bookshop, and Joe Caldwell of Red Lion Books on the first day of the World Booksellers Conference.

Connect to the world and expand the bookstore market.

Mark Thornton, Head of Bookstore Partnerships at Bookshop.org, an e-commerce platform designed to help brick-and-mortar bookstores. With more than 550 independent bookstores on the platform, Thornton is responsible for its support and promotion, including hosting online events to promote book sales and digital skills.

Thornton says that one of the ways the industry is supported on his platform: "Bookshop.org puts 10% of our sales through non-booksellers into a special 'pool' that ultimately goes to independent booksellers, and all sales are based on a carbon-neutral platform . , an environmental goal. Received many awards, including being recognized as the best B company in the world. The platform has helped independent booksellers earn over £25 million in the US and over £2.8 million in the UK.

The platform was designed with long-term internet marketing trends in mind: 35% of online purchases start with Google, 25-35% of sales are made via email and newsletters, and 49% of purchases are made via social media. In advising companies to go online, Thornton says, "Be authentic and use original and strong content, offer multiple purchasing options and be flexible."

Join your passion through the power of community

Joe Caldwell, who manages the day-to-day operations of Red Lion Books, talks about the importance of book clubs and fostering a love of reading in the community. He believed that booksellers must constantly adapt their practices, but never forgot why they got into the industry.

Expanding on this, Caldwell said, “As booksellers, we must make decisions about our business and operations every day to stay ahead of a changing world. A strong digital footprint gives me the resources and energy to focus on it. What I enjoy most is talking to people directly and giving quality readings.

Create a unique customer experience for your customers

Sarah Dennis, owner of two award-winning bookstores, Mostly Books and Borzoi Bookshop, emphasizes the importance of creating a great customer experience and building strong customer relationships. As he says, "every bookstore has a unique niche, atmosphere and community." He also recognizes the importance of social media and the importance of attracting new customers and showcasing the store's identity. However, he believes that the best way to connect with consumers is in person in a brick-and-mortar store.

To prevent the epidemic, Sarah Dennis explained the importance of community support for local bookstores. As online sales continue to grow, it highlights the strength of the local bookstore community, where shoppers continue to choose cheaper options online than in independent bookstores. He also noted their online book club to build community and provide a new interface for subscribers.
