Courses and curriculum
Updated in 2021, the online MBA program has features that all business students may need.
The Marketing MBA program now consists of 7 core courses and 3 concentration courses, which allows you to complete the program in about a year if you study full-time.
You will study topics such as leadership, strategy and innovation as part of your business. But unlike other MBA programs, all subjects are interwoven throughout the courses so that more business experience is integrated simultaneously, giving you an effective MBA experience.
As part of an MBA program, one course that may be of particular interest to you as a marketer is Brand Optimization.
Here you will learn how to balance brand management with effective marketing strategies. You will also learn the key elements of building brand identity, trust and brand habit. Throughout the course, you will gain practical experience in applying skills such as developing a marketing strategy for an organization, market research, target market identification, customer market trends and ethical considerations.
You will find that you gain real-world experience through your main job. The curriculum now includes scenario-based learning activities throughout the program. You will "live" in an interactive story, that is, you will be assigned a situation that requires a solution. You'll then work on it using skills you've learned in class - such as critical and creative thinking, problem-solving skills, or disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge.
You then have 3 concentration courses in your program. Each explores a different area of marketing that helps build a skill set you can apply successfully in the real world:
- Promotional management involves specific activities related to the management of an advertising campaign, including research, media selection, copywriting, layout, and the role of advertising agencies.
- Consumer behavior and marketing examines psychological, sociological, economic, and anthropological influences based on both theory and research. By applying these principles, you will learn how to develop effective marketing strategies and ultimately a complete marketing plan.
- Brand management helps an organization understand the theories, models, and strategies that enable it to achieve its branding goals. Through a combination of text and current research publications, students will be introduced to current and emerging theories and models of branding.
For Michael Krupp '20, the Brand Management course was the perfect foundation for his MBA in Marketing.
“Brand management was the course that stood out to me the most,” said Krupa. "The course taught me a lot about the different levels of branding, what a brand really is, and how it's more than just logos and colors."
He said the assignments and hands-on learning format helped him connect the dots and gain a deeper understanding of the material.
"While the lectures, discussions and assignments were interesting, so was my instructor," Krupa said. "Finally, I realized that a successful brand can really define an organization's unique identity and personality."
If you want to learn more about marketing outside of an MBA program, you can also earn a graduate certificate that goes beyond the standard curriculum. This allows you to mark another important document in the CV with a minimum of additional topics. If you choose to pursue a certificate in marketing degree, you can improve your marketing knowledge and add additional credentials to your resume by taking just 2 additional courses.
Don't have business training? No problem. Our MBA program is open to everyone. Interested students must have an accredited bachelor's degree for admission, but this can be in any field. Those without a bachelor's degree in business or a related field must take up to 2 foundation courses to get started. These foundations cover core business skills and can be used to fulfill elective requirements for the general MBA profile. With the basics, the maximum length of an online MBA will be 36 credits.
Attend full or part time. MBA students have the option to study full-time (with 2 class hours per semester) or part-time (with 1 class per semester). Full-time students should be able to complete the program in approximately 1 year, and part-time students in approximately 2 years. Our SNHU students are busy and often juggle work, family, and other commitments, so you may want to work with your academic advisor to determine a course plan that is right for you. The good news is that you can switch from full-time to part-time and back to work as often as you like.
